The two main types of ghosts . . .

A residual haunting is one where the ghost is stuck in time.  The ghosts repeat a certain action (of significance) in their life like a tape.  They do not know you are there nor do they care.  These types of hauntings are not intelligent which means they will not interact with you so it is not worth trying to communicate with them.   Many residual hauntings are ghosts who repeat the last few moments before their death.  These apparitions, sounds, or smells can happen often or very rarely.  Many ghost hunters will try to come to the haunted place on a significant night such as an anniversary of the death or the anniversary of the action the ghost may take.  If you have a residual haunting in your home, you don’t have to worry because they are 100% harmless. Common types of residual hauntings are repeated deaths by the ghosts, doing daily chores, or ghost trains.

Intelligent Hauntings 

Intelligent Hauntings are aware of their place and time.  These hauntings can interact with you and possibly answer questions you ask them (which you can pick up on EVP's).  Many types of ghost can fall under intelligent hauntings.  Poltergeists are a common intelligent haunting because they can communicate with individuals or attack them.
